Data Analytics & Governance Review - Greyhound Racing
CurbyMcLintock was engaged by the Greyhound Welfare & Integrity Commission (GWIC), to undertake an independent review of the box draw process used by Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW). The review was initiated following concerns raised in the industry about the robustness of the process and the potential for system vulnerabilities to affect the fairness and integrity of greyhound racing outcomes.
The engagement required a detailed examination of the end-to-end box draw process, including document reviews, interviews with key GRNSW personnel, and observations of live grading and draw activities. As part of the review, system-based testing was conducted within the OzChase environment to assess whether the system’s design and controls could allow box draw outcomes to be influenced, intentionally or unintentionally.
A substantial data analytics exercise was also undertaken, involving the extraction and analysis of historical box draw and redraw data from the OzChase system. This work required collaboration with Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA) to ensure reliable datasets were produced for analysis.
The investigation identified several vulnerabilities, including the ability to redraw races multiple times and inconsistencies in audit logging. Clear recommendations were made to strengthen system controls, enhance oversight, and reduce opportunities for manipulation, including:
restricting redraw functionality
improving audit and alert processes
implementing additional integrity safeguards for the box draw system
