Cybercrime: Business Email Compromise

An ASX-listed pharmaceutical company fell victim to a sophisticated business email compromise (BEC) scam, resulting in several million dollars being fraudulently transferred to a bank account in Hong Kong. The organisation required an urgent forensic review to identify the source of the cybercrime, assess how the compromise occurred, and trace the movement of the misappropriated funds.
The investigation involved detailed analysis of email traffic, network activity and transactional data to pinpoint the point of compromise and map out the flow of funds. Working closely with legal specialists in Asia, we sought Norwich Pharmacal Orders to compel disclosure of bank account information and recover funds traced during the asset-tracking process.  We secured the return of approximately 20% of the total amount misappropriated.
The work extended to conducting interviews with a principal of the fraudulent company in Asia and continuing efforts to trace additional missing funds across multiple jurisdictions, leveraging cross-border intelligence, financial analysis and structured follow-up inquiries.
